Dr. Barclay with Something to Think About - THE MEANING OF SIN

THE MEANING OF SIN

In Romans it is stated that: “For all have sinned, and have come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23, KJV). The Bible also says that: “…the wages of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23) meaning that everyone will reap the consequences of our daily activities.

But what really does ‘to sin’ imply? Does it really refer to all the overt things an individual does each day, thus making “the evil that man does” so much greater for one than for another? After all, not everyone starts a war or commits murder so that perhaps some will avoid the “death” that may be due to others. So what does sin really imply?

According to Barnhouse*, there are at least 12 different Hebrew and Greek words that are all similar in meaning and thus translated by our word sin. These can apparently be loosely summarized by five different meanings.

Perhaps the most common is missing the mark. In Paul’s time, archery was as common as shooting is today. Similar to our events today, as one became more proficient at the activity, the target would be moved farther and farther back allowing a greater development of skill and accuracy. At some point, no matter how proficient one became, the target could not be reached. The target God has set for us is so far removed that no one ever becomes able to reach it and, therefore, no-one can satisfy the demands of God.

Sin apparently is also falling short of the righteousness of God. Romans states that: “They have all turned aside; They have together become unprofitable; There is none who does good, no, not one” (Romans 3:12). In other words, no matter how good we consider ourselves to be or how much good we attempt to do, no one can meet the righteousness of God and in His view there is no one who is considered righteous. Just as we can’t hit the target by our skill, we also can’t meet His righteousness by our goodness. In a sense, this also refers to “overstepping a boundary” in that our lack of complete goodness often becomes out right rebellion, and as children often refuse to do the bidding of their parents, we likewise refuse to follow God’s direction as well. Thus, our lack of goodness may become outright rebellion, and as well, sin.

A third word for sin means falling instead of standing. A synonym for standing is upright and the word used for falling implies a position of weakness rather that of standing straight and upright before God. We tend to be weak and crooked instead of standing upright and steadfast as we should and therefore no one has maintained a righteous position before God

Sin also implies being ignorant instead of knowing. This implies that being ignorant of the laws of God is not an excuse. This also follows from the first words of Satan in the first Interrogation in the Bible: “…‘Has God indeed said…’”(Genesis 3:1). The sin is not being ignorant of general knowledge, or of not having advanced education, but of the knowledge and commandments of God. Peter says in 1 Peter 2:2 that we should “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that [we] may grow thereby”(1 Peter 2:2). This concept is also seen in Hebrews 5:12-14:

For though by this time you ought to be teachers,

you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God;

and you have come to need milk and not solid food.

For everyone who partakes only of milk is unskilled

in the word of righteousness, for he is a babe.

But solid food belongs to those who are of full age,

that is, who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

It is a sin for one to be ignorant of God’s way of salvation, and one day we will all be examined on our knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Finally, the fifth word for sin means diminishing that which should be rendered in full. We are to “…love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength…and keep His charge, His statutes, His Judgments, and His commandments always” (Deuteronomy 6:5 and 11:1). Luke 10:27 says: “…‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbour as yourself.’” By not doing such, we have short changed God and have diminished that which God has required of us. We have cheated God by spending on ourselves that which was rightfully His and not ours until we had yielded it fully to Him.

It’s hopeless for us by ourselves because no one can avoid sin and, as mentioned before, the penalty of sin is death. That is why nothing we can do ourselves is sufficient; the target is too far removed for our abilities. We can only avoid the penalty justly awaiting for each of us by accepting the gift Christ gave. He paid the price of our sins on our behalf. “…Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures…”(1 Corinithians 15:3).

The gift of payment has been made, therefore, it is up to us to accept it. Otherwise, the penalty for sin awaits all of us. “For all have sinned, and have come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23, KJV).

It is something we all must think about.

Pastor Caroline - Lost In Your Walk

Lost In Your Walk

Philippians Chapter 4 Verses 6-7 in the Good News Bible reminds us:

(6) Don’t worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart.

(7) And God‘s peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.

Lost in your walk? Do you feel as if every road is a dead end? Nothing seems to come into place for you. You see others getting answers to prayer and you wonder; why not me?

Now is the time to read the above scripture again slowly, using your name before the word worry. Take a moment to do that, please.

When you feel lost, away from God, just know that God is not lost and He has not left you. He is not away from you. He wants you to continue to press into Him, read His word, listen to worship music and worship onto Him.  Ask Him to calm your anxious spirit. Ask Him with a thankful heart, as we are told in verse 6 of our scripture today. And verse 7 gives you assurance that God‘s peace, which is more than you can understand, will keep you safe.

Sometimes we feel so far away from God that we tell ourselves He does not even see us. Nothing could be farther from the truth so please let me remind you that God is the very One who created the whole world and sat it at all in place. Also in Matthew Chapter 6 Verse 26 we are told –

(26) Look at the birds flying around: they do not plant seeds, gather a harvest and put it in the barns; yet your Father in heaven takes care of them! Aren’t you worth much more than birds?

Think of this for a moment. Don’t you think you mean more to God than the birds? I can assure you, you do!! God loves, supplies, and takes care of everything and we need to be grateful for His supply.

Stress in life can cause us to feel lost or separated from our faith and from God. Sometimes we cannot see the forest for the trees. The things that stand in our way draws us from God, when in reality; they should push us towards the very One who can help us get through the stress, grief, loss of a job, or separation of a loved one. And these are just to mention a few. God can and will help us with the daily pressures that draws us from Him and those He has in place around us for support. When life is upside down and inside out, that is when we need to do some troubleshooting. Access the problem and call in the professional. Stand on your faith; call on God and pour your heart out to Him.  He will direct you and show you how to move forward.

Count your blessings and look back, see what God has done before, for you. Look at today and know that He gave you the start to this day. Don’t miss what He has for you today, thanking Him before you even see the blessing. That’s standing in your faith. You are not lost – you simply have taken a misstep. Now plant your feet solid on the ground under you and take a deep breath and talk with someone you trust, God, or someone He has appointed to be there for you. Let this person help you find your way and one day you may well be able to return that favor. Do something nice for someone else, an act of kindness, and this will help you feel better about yourself.

You are not lost in your walk – you may simply be on a new path, one God has chosen. Don’t be afraid, do not worry, He is leading. You are in good hands as God leads the way. Let your faith guide you as you trust in the Lord and His peace will surround you to a point you may not fully understand, but that is OK – just trust in Him. You are safe in union with Christ Jesus and there’s no safer place to be. The Lord in His word tells us in Philippians Chapter 4 verse 9, last line,

And God who gives us peace will be with you.

What an assurance we have.

Be blessed in this day for you have truly found your way!!

Dr. Barclay with Something to Think About - JUDGMENT

 JUDGMENT

In Hebrews, it is stated that “…it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,”(9:27). There are many verses and statements in the Bible which could be open to interpretation, often in a way that one would like the interpretation to infer, but the statement given above is really not one of these. It is pretty straight forward; each of us is to die once.

The second part of that statement, however, is not as often repeated or as well defined. After all, we can only relate to judgment as we know it, and it is quite obvious, in some cases, that judgment and justice do not at times correspond. Judgments, as we perceive them, are often modified by certain conditions such as: extenuating circumstances, innuendo, undue delay, and/or by human bias. In courts, judgment is at times modified by “tricks” used by either the prosecution or the defence. In other words, judgment is often not perceived as rendering justice.

However, the Bible does not indicate that such manipulation will be available when divine (heavenly) judgment takes place. Apparently no extenuating circumstances will be permitted for the judgment has already been rendered; we are all guilty. And the one chance to have that judgment reversed has already been offered to us; we have to decide whether to accept or not that chance because any judgment will be considered justice and, according to the Bible, will be based on seven principles (remember that number) which are worth noting.*

  1. TRUTH: “…we know that the judgment of God is according to truth…” (Romans 2:2).

  1. ACCUMULATED GUILT: “…in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,” (Romans 2:5).

  1. WORKS: “…who will render to each one according to his deeds” (Romans 2:6).
“And they were judged, each one according to his works” (Revelation 20:13).

  1. NO FAVOURITISM: “For there is no partiality with God” (Romans 2:11) .

  1. PERFORMANCE: “…for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified…” (Romans 2:13).

  1. SECRETS: “…in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ…” (Romans 2:16).

  1. REALITY not RELIGIOUS PROFESSION: “Indeed you are called a Jew, and rest on the law, and make your boast in God…(but) do you dishonour God through breaking the law?…he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward…but he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God” (Romans 2:17, 23, 28-29).

Judgment is coming at some time for each of us. It is something we all should be aware of and keep in mind.

Pastor Caroline - Trust and Obey

Trust and Obey

In Proverbs 29 Verse 25 the Good News Bible tell us:

(25) It is dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you, but if you trust the Lord, you are safe.

I love the line, “but if you trust the Lord, you are safe”.

It reminds me of an old gospel song- Safe In the Arms of Jesus.

Sometimes our pride and/ or vanity can bring us to a place of fear and anxiousness. Then we face disappointments, problems and despair. What do we do then? I have met people over my lifetime who were so concerned as to what others thought of them that it drove them to distraction. Distraction can bring us to a place where we cannot and do not pay attention to our surroundings. This can cause an accident or misjudgment that brings on pain or any number of outcomes. When we become people who are trying to keep up with the Joneses so to speak, or people pleasers we are treading on uneven territory. It is dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you as we are told here in Proverbs chapter 29 verse 25. In our walk with Jesus and serving Him daily do we look to please God or man? We cannot do both. When we choose; we set ourselves apart. If we choose to be concerned with what others think of us, then, we of course try to live our lives to please others and be accepted by them. If we choose to follow the Lord and do as He asks, then, we may well be set apart from the masses of the population. However, the last line of Proverbs 29:25 tells us:

but, if you trust the Lord, you are safe.

Psalm 56 Verse 4 in the Good News Bible tells us: I trust in God and I’m not afraid; I praise him for what he’s promised. What can a mere human being do to me?

A lady recently asked me how can I get rid of this fear that grips my life? She fears not being as good as others. She definitely is and there is no question about it, but, that is not how she sees herself. There in is the problem, it is dangerous to be concerned with what others think of you.

As we sat in conversation I gave this lady the two scriptures I have used today. I told her to live her life for Jesus, to start each day with a prayer to Him, call out to Him during the day to help with whatever situation she is facing, and to end every day in prayer with Him just before going to sleep. Then her thoughts are on Jesus and not on any one particular person. I also shared a saying I used to hear the older folks say when I was a child. John Lingate was the author of this wonderful saying and it is so true.

You can please some of the people all of the time,

You can please all of the people some of the time,

but you can’t please all the people all the time.

Nor can we live up to the expectations others put on us and even the ones we put on ourselves sometimes. Sometimes it is dangerous to be concerned with what we think of ourselves, because we can be hard on ourselves.

I reminded this lady God made her, and He does not make mistakes. He helps mature us, encourages us, teach us, disciplines us and walks through life with us when we accept Him as Lord and Savior. We are all called in our Christian walk to spread the love of Jesus, and the good news the Bible teaches us. This is her calling as a Christian and she is to walk in it, as we all are.

She has been on the receiving end of words that were not encouraging, life-changing or life building. She has always felt she has had to please others to be accepted. Such a burden for one to carry throughout a lifetime. I pray that both she and anyone reading this message today will see the release of this burden in their lives, in the words of Proverbs 29:25.

God’s word tells us we can be strong in the difficult times of life because He will be with us. His assurance and power in our lives helps us understand peace and contentment in such a way that joy rises up from the depths of our being. Our walk with the Lord, our time of fellowship with Him, strengthens who we are in Him, so much so, that we never have to please man. So friends, you do not need to be concerned about others what others think of you because when you trust in the Lord you are safe.

Today I will close this writing with what I told this lady in conversation about pleasing people or God.

We live in fear of pleasing people; for no matter what we do, not everyone will be pleased with us, however, if we live our lives pleasing onto the Lord, He will keep us safe. When we come to the Lord every day with an open honest heart, and live a faith filled life, doing that which brings honour to Him, then we are pleasing God.

Trust and obey for there’s no other way,

To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

I suggested to my lady friend to listen to the song and I told her she could find it on YouTube. Trust and Obey by Don Moen. Such a beautiful song to bring us close to the Lord and remind us to Whom we belong.

You are His masterpiece!!

Dr. Barclay with Something to Think About - HEAVEN

HEAVEN

“Everyone wants to go to Heaven but no one wants to die” is a statement that most people have heard before. The fear of death is, at least in part, our fear of the unknown.  Even if you are a true believer, there can still be that hesitancy about taking a journey to a place which no one has ever seen or from which no one has ever returned. It takes faith to make such a journey without fear and perhaps, at least, a bit of reluctance. The same faith that Abram must have had when the Lord spoke to him and said: “…‘Get out of your country, from your family and from your father’s house, to a land that I will show you.’…So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him…” (Genesis 12:1,4)

Just as Abram had to take God at His word when he left Ur for lands unknown, so we must take God at His word as we depart this life for the one promised after. However, we probably have more information about our potential destination than Abram had regarding his. That is, providing we examine that information carefully.

“Everyone wants to go to heaven…”, however, few seem to examine the criteria required to make the journey and fewer still seem to realize that the Bible never explicitly states that we really go to heaven at all. In fact, heaven apparently comes to us.

In Revelation, John stated that: “…I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away….Then I…saw the holy city New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven…” (21:1,2) where it had been readied for us.

Revelation also tells us that heaven is a place with no more sin because “…the former things have passed away” (21:4). Those who have not followed God’s direction and have preferred sin “…shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death” (21:8).

Thirdly, it is explained that this New Jerusalem, will be spectacular in beauty. It is described being made of pure gold with a large wall fashioned of jasper and each one of its foundations adorned with a different precious stone. The wall will have twelve pearl gates with twelve foundations with associated angels and apostles and children of Israel as well (Revelation 21:18-21,12,14).

Fourthly, this New Jerusalem is to be a large area of 12000 furlongs in length, breadth, and height. That would be about 1500 miles in each direction, approximately the distance from New Glasgow to Charleston, South Carolina and about four times the size of the state of Alaska.

Fifthly, the city will be one of worship and of godly activity. There will be no need of a place of worship for God Himself will be there and both He and the lamb will be its light and temple. “…the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth [shall] bring their glory and honour into it” (Revelation 21:24).

Sixthly, it will be a city of life with “a pure river of water of life [and] in the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, [is] the tree of life…” (Revelation 22:1-2) There will be, in that city, “…the throne of God and of the Lamb…and they shall reign forever and ever” (Revelation 22:3,5).

Lastly, it will be a secure city in that: “…there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life” (Revelation 21:27). Others will be found elsewhere presumably in “the lake which burns with fire” (Revelation 21:8)

Whether this is all literally true, or if it’s primarily a poetic interpretation, is a question that’s impossible to definitively answer. To some degree, however, we must understand that it is really only academic. The real point is that we all know that at some time we will have to make a journey and, like Abram, will have to take that journey believing in what God has told us.  We will have to have the faith that if we follow God’s instructions, as Abram did, we will end up in a place more beautiful and perfect than words can describe. Paul relates “I know a man..how he was caught up into Paradise and heard inexpressible words, which it not possible for a man to utter” (2 Corinthians 12:3-4) because:

“eye has not seen, nor ear heard,

Nor have entered into the heart of man

The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”

(1 Corinthians 2:9)

Whatever the actual result is, it is certainly better than the alternative represented by the lake of fire and brimstone. And since we all must, at some point, journey from our homeland to a place “unknown” that only He can show us, the decision whether to heed His direction or not is something we all should think carefully about.

Pastor Caroline - What God Requires

What God Requires

Thanks Who may dwell in the house of the Lord?

Let’s look at the Good News Bible in Psalm 15 verses 1 to 5 for the answer to this question.

(1) Lord, who may enter your temple? Who may worship on Zion, your sacred hill?

(2) A person who always obeys God in everything and always does what is right, whose words are true and sincere,

(3) and who does not slander others. He does no wrong to his friends and does not spread rumours about his neighbours .

(4) He despises those whom God rejects, but honours those who obey the Lord. He always does what he promises, no matter how much it may cost.

(5) He makes loans without charging interest and cannot be bribed to testify against the innocent.

Whoever does these things will always be secure.

This is indeed filled with the answer to the question, who may dwell with the Lord? Does this question mean when we die who made dwell with the Lord? Or who may dwell with the Lord during our life here on earth? This psalm was written by David, the Psalmist and I believe he wants us to understand who made dwell with the Lord now, as well, as in eternity.

When our hearts are set on God‘s ways we will obey the Lord in His ways. The instruction given to us through the Psalmist here is a wonderful list of what God requires of us throughout our lifetime, leading us to eternity. Now let’s look at these 11 points.

The person who;

(1) obeys God in everything

(2) does what is right

(3) speaks true and sincere words

(4) does no wrong to his friends

(5) does not spread rumors

(6) despises those whom God rejects

(7)  those who obey the Lord

(8) does when he promises (keeps his word)

(9) does not allow cost to factor into his service

(10) gives a loan – interest free

(11) cannot be bribed to testify against the innocent.

Then we are told:

Whoever does these things will always be secure.

Whoever – that is you and me, or anyone else in the world who lives by this instruction; will dwell with the Lord. When we live our lives according to the word of the Lord we will “be dwelling with the Lord”, now and all the days of our life, here and in eternity.

If our fellowship with family, friends, neighbours and strangers is moulded after this instruction we certainly will be setting a Godly example as to how we live our lives and how they should live theirs as well. When we go above and beyond the rules of the world and live our lives from a heavenly perspective, people will know we are different. If they are serving the Lord they will know we are as well, however, if they are not serving they will question “what is wrong with them.” Then, we are given a wonderful opportunity to witness our faith, fellowship and service in Christ Jesus our Lord. We can share with them this instruction we are reading about today. What a wonderful way to start someone on the path that leads to the heart of our heavenly loving Father.

When we live this instruction given to us today we will build a strong character within ourselves. We will be people who can be counted on. We will stand strong and not be swayed or moved by this whim or that whim that the world offers. We know our foundation is firm in the Lord and His word. We will hear His voice daily as we study His word, listen to those called and anointed to preach His word, we can hear Him through worship music, also in sharing the word of God with those like-minded and doing our devotionals. So many ways to receive and build on His word, making our lives strong as we dwell with the Lord.

How sweet it is to know every day we have the creator of the whole earth giving us instruction as how to live a life pleasing onto Him and securing all things under His name.

I simply do not know how to bless your day any better than to say, as David the Psalmist says to us – dwell with the Lord doing as He requires and you will always be secure.

Praise the Lord for His glorious word! Today and every day you can enjoy your life as you dwell with God. He requires little of us and we are given so much from Him to enjoy an abundant life, and His blessings to us, who have received Him as Lord and Savior.

Dr. Barclay with Something to Think About - I AM

 I AM

It has been the consensus of most people that Moses wrote the first five books of the Bible. So, when God sought him in the wilderness and requested that he lead His people from their captivity in Egypt to freedom, he probably should not have been too surprised when, asking God the name of the One sending him to Egypt, the reply that came back was: “…‘I AM WHO I AM…I AM has sent..you’” (Exodus 3:14). Perhaps Moses did not recall, or remember at the time, that in Genesis, God uses this term seven times to refer to Himself; using the term at times more than once.

He states: “…I AM your shield…” (Genesis 15:1) a word from the Lord to Abram indicating His protection.

Then He said: “…I AM the Lord…” (Genesis 15:7) again to Abram and in the context of what was being said, indicating the He can provide whatever is needed.

He again said to Abram “…I AM Almighty God…” (Genesis 17:1) when he doubted God’s ability to grant a child to a person so old. God indicated He could do all things.

He said that “…I AM the God of your father Abraham…” (Genesis 26:24) to Issac when he was having problems, reminding him of who He was and of his heritage.

In addition He said that: “…I AM with you…” (Genesis 26:24) reminding him (and us) that He is always near.

Further, He said to Jacob “I AM the God of Bethel…” (Genesis 31:13) reminding him that what God did in one place, He will continue to do in others.

And so towards the end of Genesis, He once more reminded Israel that: “…I AM God, the God of your father; do not fear…” (Genesis 46:3).

It’s interesting that God, in the first book of the Bible, revealed seven of His attributes, by the saying “I AM” in seven different ways because Jesus then, in the Book of John, revealed seven corresponding attributes in the same way.

In John, He proclaimed: “…I AM the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst” (John 6:35). Jesus indicated He could provide what ever is really needed.

He also said “…I AM the light of the world” (John 9:5). Indicating that He will show us the right path to follow.

He told us in John: “I AM the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved…”(10:9)  not just signifying that He would show us the right path but that He was the only path.

He went on to say in the next verse: “I AM the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep” indicating His protection and that He would always be close by.

He said: “…I AM the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live” (John 11:25), thus with His promised protection and this reassurance, one should not truly fear.

In John 14:6 He goes even further by saying: “…I AM the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the father except through Me,” showing to all that He was truly Almighty God.

And lastly, He proclaimed that “I AM the vine, you are the branches, He who abides Me, and I in him, bear much fruit: for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5). He is the source from which all springs and as such, He is the God on whom Abraham, Issac, Jacob, and others had been dependant. This was emphasized in John 8:58 when He said: “…before Abraham was, I AM.”

Moses may not have had the same opportunity to appreciate the name God used to refer to Himself as we have, but with the Bible we should be able to appreciate more readily how Jesus used the same name to confirm that He was, indeed, God.

One more thing to look at and think about.
